TORCH 2008

Dear GKC/WPC Members:

This year the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus will recognize several individuals at the annual Torch Dinner on Wednesday September 24, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center.

At this time we are asking for nominations for the awards listed below. Please consider nominating someone who has made contributions towards advancing equal rights and opportunities for women and who has strived to promote participation by women in the political process.

The following are the awards for which we are looking for nominees:

The Torch Award: Awarded to a young woman of promise who has been very involved with the Caucus and committed to its mission and plans to continue her career in public service. (Past Honorees include: Lisa Roush, Amy Sweeny Davis, Lisa Gruenloh, Donna Phelps, Lisa Sebree, Jessica Kerrigan, Alison Barnes Martin, Cathy Jolly, Beth Gottstein, Michelle Peltier, Kim Carlos, Beth Low, Brook Balentine, Stephanie Guerin, Jill Jolicoeur and Lindsey Walker.)

The Erika S. Fox Pillar Award: Awarded to a remarkable role model of political accomplishment to the benefit of women and women’s issues. (Past Honorees include: Erika Fox, Doris Quinn, Elizabeth Ossorio, Rosemary Smithson, Linda McNicholas, Biddy Hurlbut, Sharon Kingsbury, Claire McCaskill, Karen McCarthy, Kathleen Sebelius, Carol Sader, Melba Curls, Crystal Williams, Kay Barnes and Mary O’Halloran.)

The Mel Carnahan Good Guy Award: Awarded to a male community leader who has supported the Caucus’ mission of promoting women and women’s issues. (Past Awardees include: Mel Carnahan, Scott Lakin, Ken Jacobs, Jack Swall, Dennis Moore, Robert Meneilly, James B. Nutter, Scott Burnett, Charles Wheeler, David Adkins, Rabbi Mark H. Levin, Emanuel Cleaver, Alvin Brooks and Paul Morrison.)

Community Service Award: Awarded for outstanding accomplishment and representation of the power of women through community service. (Past Awardees include Annette Morgan, Ruth Shechter, Sharon Hoffman, Patty Brous, Martha Jane Starr, Audrey Langworthy, Angela Bennett, Maime Hughes, Vicki Noteis, Sister Pat Kenoyer, Joanne Collins, Jan Marcason, Sisters Corita Bussanmas and Berta Sailor.)

Harriett Woods Guardian of the Flame Award:
Awarded to those who keep the fire of freedom and justice burning for women in the greater Kansas City area. (Past Awardees include: Jean Carnahan, Mary Groves Bland, Marilyn Shapiro and Terry Satterlee)
